The 2005
convention of the I. C. G. A. was held at the
Radisson Hotel, Airport, in Indianapolis. The
dates were July 12 - 16, 2005. The Early Bird
pizza party was held on Tuesday evening. There
were several members who arrived early to get
their rooms set up with their Room Display and
their glass for sale. The pizza, sandwiches, and
salads were very good. The pie was just a good
way to end the meal.
The 8:00 a.m.
Breakfast seminars were given by Harry Meads,
Geneva Crosby, and Carl Booker. Harry and Geneva
used glass from their collections to show and
tell us about. Carl had glass from different
Hoosier Carnival Glass Association members who
had written an appropriate story to go with the
piece. These “early” seminars seem to be popular
as many members get up early to attend.
The special
Display Room this year featured “red” Carnival
Glass. The display covered several tables and
was very interesting. Richard Cinclair gave an
informative seminar on the pieces that were in
the display.
The Wednesday
night Ice Cream Social was served along with
many different kinds of toppings, whipped cream,
and cookies. Carnival Glass people seem to have
a way of getting rid of lots of ice cream.
The Thursday
luncheon-business meeting was well attended.
Brian Pitman conducted the business meeting, and
Jim Seeck sold part of the souvenir whimsies.
The main issue of the business meeting was the
election of officers. The results of the
election can be read in Lee Markley’s report of
the Business Meeting.
On Thursday
afternoon Tom Mordini and Richard Cinclair
presented “A Showcase of Rarities” seminar.
Several members contributed glass for this
seminar. It was a sight to behold.
Don Chamberlain
created a “Detective Search” which kept many
members busy trying to identify the item which
had been described. It seemed that some of the
members were sharing their information. It was a
lot of fun. Thanks, Don, for your efforts.
Debbie Yung was the winner. Congratulations,
Debbie.
On Friday at
2:00 p.m., members gathered to see some of the
special pieces of Carnival Glass that Phil
Hessenius would have in his sale. Phil talked to
us about “My Favorite Things.” It was not an
easy thing to do as this would be the last time
that Phil could call these special pieces “his”
glass. Phil kept the talk interesting with
stories of how these special pieces were
obtained. Playing “Do You Want To Be A Carnival
Glass Millionaire?” helped everyone relax.
After Phil’s
talk we were given the opportunity to view all
of the auction glass. It was a great display and
we were looking forward to the auction on
Saturday.
The Friday
night banquet was good even though some of the
tables had to wait for an extended time before
they were served. After dinner Lee Markley made
his annual presentations. The distance winners
were Sven and Vivien Awerson from Sweden.
Richard Cinclair won the “most members” award.
Room Display
winners were:
1st - Larry
and Mary Helen Yung
2d - Gail Eichhorst
3d - Ted and Judy Meeker
4th - Carl and Eunice Booker
5th - Jim and Darlene Grogan
Eunice Booker
installed the new directors. Gary and Donna
Braden had brought some beautiful pieces from
their collection to show us and talk about. They
told us how and from whom the pieces were
purchased. It was a nice, personal touch and
kept us interested throughout the presentation.
Jim Seeck was
called on to sell the remaining souvenir
whimsies. Good prices were realized. Thanks to
everyone who purchased a whimsey. Brian
Pitman thanked everyone who had helped in any
way to make the convention a success. There were
a lot of different people involved. Lee Markley
thanked Brian for all the work he had done to
bring the convention to reality. Unless someone
has organized a convention, he doesn’t know how
much work is involved. Thanks, Brian, for all
that you do and did in making this convention
the success that it was.
I must mention
Ann McMorris and the Hospitality Room. Ann works
very hard to create an inviting atmosphere and
one in which everyone will feel relaxed while
taking part in the “goodies” that are available
for us to eat. A big THANKS to Ann for all that
she does for the I.C.G.A.
We’re looking
forward to the 2006, 40th Annual Convention of
I.C.G.A. which will be held at the Marriott
Hotel in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Already members are
busy getting things started.
